I don’t know about you, but the winter is really getting to me this year. I thought that my week in Jamaica would keep me feeling revitalized until at least the beginning of March, but lately I’ve been feeling like the wind is out of my sails. It could be because the temperature has been way below seasonal for weeks now. Usually at this time of year it’s about -3 (which it actually is today – yea!), but it’s been more like -15 to -20 every day! I’m still trying to make it to the gym 4 or 5 times/week, and to eat right, but overall I feel sluggish and unmotivated. It’s hard to do anything other than get home, cook dinner and sit on the couch for the night. Are you feeling this way too? If so, make sure you’re getting enough vitamin B12 or cobalamin.
Why?
Well…B12 is known as the “energy” vitamin because it stimulates the body’s metabolism of proteins, fats & carbs. This vitamin is also very important for proper growth and development in children because it facilitates the growth of the myelin sheath, which is vital in the proper functioning of our nervous system.
Need an energy boost? Try and incorporate more B12 into your diet. Good food sources include most fish, egg yolks, milk products and yogurt.
In the meantime, here are some things that I’ve been doing to help get me through the winter:
-Think about this – spring is 32 days away!
-Buy some fresh cut flowers for your place – my hubby just got me tulips for V day and they remind me that life does exist under the brown, dirty snow
-Use cocoa butter lotion after getting out of the shower – it reminds me of the Caribbean (Desert Essence makes a great one!)
-Don’t turn the fan on when you shower; let the humid air fill the bathroom
-Go for a steam after your workout
-Plan spring & summer getaways – planning a trip gives you something exciting to focus on
-Eat a grapefruit or orange – the citrus smell is invigorating and reminds me of warmer weather
-Light lots of candles – if you have to stay inside at least make it cozy!
What gets you through the winter months? Do you have any ideas or suggestions that keep you feeling energized?
