Looking for a new healthy snack idea?
Add pistachios to your next grocery list! Not because they’re super trendy right now*, but because they have awesome health benefits:
-They satisfy your hunger: a ½ cup serving has the same amount of protein as an egg!
-They’re a great source of non-heme iron
-They’re a great source of vitamin B6, which helps balance hormones & prevents fluid retention (a.k.a the perfect snack for PMS cravings)
-They raise good HDL cholesterol levels, and reduce bad LDL cholesterol levels.
-They’re a source of beta-carotene (same vitamin that’s in carrots & leafy greens), which means they’re good for your eyes, skin, hair & nails
-They’re a great source of the antioxidant manganese. Antioxidants can prevent cancer & premature aging, and prevent cholesterol from being oxidized. Oxidized cholesterol is what leads to high blood pressure & heart disease
-A half-cup is 160 calories. Pair that with an apple or clementine and you’ve got yourself the perfect 250 calorie mid-afternoon snack that will keep your hunger under control until dinner.
-Pistachios are the perfect healthy snack for work – just keep a bag in your desk, and you’re good to go!
Tip: I would recommend that you buy the type in the shell. Taking the time to crack them will slow you down, and prevent you from over-eating. It also makes the ½ cup serving size last longer!
*BTW – I think the “Wonderful Pistachios” company has done a great job re-branding a nut, and I love that a healthy packaged food is being promoted for once!
