Weekly Health Tip: Is Brown Sugar Better than White Sugar?

The idea that brown sugar is better for you than white sugar is a common misconception. Maybe because we associate brown food with healthy choices – brown bread, brown rice, whole wheat pasta…you get the point.

The fact is brown sugar is just refined white sugar with molasses added to it to make it brown. The darker the brown sugar, the more molasses in it.

Molasses on it’s own is good for you; a source of calcium, magnesium, potassium & iron, but the amount used in brown sugar is not enough to make it a healthy choice.

Instead of brown sugar, I would recommend raw cane sugar, or even better – organic coconut palm sugar. It’s all-natural, doesn’t spike your blood sugar (which is what causes sugar to turn into fat), and it tastes similar to brown sugar! Use it exactly like you would regular sugar in your baking, coffee, tea – whatever!

You can buy coconut sugar at Bulk Barn, and it’s now available at Costco – so sweet!
